The Red Thread Legend

The Red Thread Legend

The Red Thread is a symbol of connection, protection and blessing. The Red Thread Legend is known in many traditions throughout our world. Accepting this Legend as real helps us connect to those who came before us, those who will come after us, and those of this present time. It helps us connect to the Cosmos. It helps us connect to earth, water, air and fire. It helps us connect to our planet, Earth.

The Chinese explanation is the easiest to understand. Simply know that the Red Thread Legend is explained in many ways.

The Chinese Red Thread Legend says:

“Those who are supposed to meet are connected by an invisible red thread since before birth. This thread can stretch and tangle but it will never break. We will eventually connect. Choosing to stay connected and how we weave is our choice.”

We can trace versions of the Red Thread Legend all the way back to cavemen days, before many of the religions of today existed, when we gathered around fires, told stories and solved problems.

Sacred Connection

One of the best explanations of the Red Thread Legend is found in the children’s book The Invisible String written by Patrice Karst.

The Invisible String explains that an invisible red thread connects us all. We are each connected to each other. No one is alone or separate or banished or lost.

We belong; no matter what, we belong. We are connected; no matter what, we are connected. You are some piece of the tribe called Human; some piece of the collective called Human.

We are all connected. There is no “them”; there is only “us”.

We each walk our own journey, but, including the Red Thread Legend in our life, reminds us that we are not alone; that there are others near us; that each holds their own piece of the Red Thread.

When we image this thread flowing from person to person, each person holding their unique piece; this thread flowing through the Cosmos, the earth, the water, the air and all life and our planet Earth; we get a strong sense of the sacredness of connectedness, the sacredness of each of us and the sacredness of the place we live, our home, the Earth.

We belong.

The Four Teachings of the Red Thread

Their are four parts to the Red Thread Legend. These parts are called teachings.

Teaching One:

We are connected. We always have been, always will be. We are connected to each other, the Cosmos, the Earth and all that Earth contains. We are connected to Spirit, the creative intelligence that flows in us, as us and through us. We are connected to angels and all beings.

This connection can never be broken.

This connection was formed before we came to this planet. It is part of our destiny.

Saying “I am connected” means that you have chosen to belong to this planet and to the human family. You are choosing to believe that you always have been, are and always will be connected.

The Legend explains that before you came here it was decided that you would have a place on the thread and a people to serve; that every thing you have done leads you to this place and these people. You are not meant to serve everyone, just the people on your thread; you are not meant to do everything, just the assignments on your piece of the thread.

Teaching Two:

Each of us has a sacred responsibility. You have a calling on your life. You are responsible for living that call. Recognizing that you are called and are responsible for answering that call changes how you live.

It becomes easier to say “no” to certain activities, to certain people. It becomes easier to know who is on your thread, who are the ones you are to serve.

You see yourself as valuable, as worthy, as essential. You see others as valuable, as worthy, as essential.

You treat yourself, your home, your people as being sacred.

When things including the Earth and everything and everyone are treated as sacred, everything changes for the better.

Teaching Three:

Each of us has our own piece of the Red Thread. This piece is unique to us. This uniqueness means that each of us is essential because each of us has wisdom, gifts, talents and skills that others may not have. What we have is needed. What we have is valuable.

Your unique piece is your vision. It contains your specialness: your gifts, talents, skills, experiences and wisdom.

No one else can hold this piece or do this piece for you.

Knowing your piece helps you live your life with clarity and focus. Again, you know what to say “no” to, what to let go and what to welcome.

Holding our piece encourages us to create and to make decisions with intention.

Teaching Four:

We celebrate.

We celebrate our connectedness, knowing that no one or thing can sever our connection to Spirit, to the collective called Human or our connection to our self.

We celebrate knowing that we are only responsible for our self and our piece of the Red Thread. Everyone is to do their own work, live their own life, make their own choices.

We celebrate our walk into the future. Each step we take is one to celebrate.

Conclusion

I invite you to study the Red Thread Legend. Perhaps there is a Red Thread Circle that meets in your area. Circle is a great way to increase understanding.

Most of all, I invite you to live the Red Thread Legend way; that is, I invite you to live knowing that you are connected to Spirit and all there was, is and will be; that you have a call on your life and are responsible to live that call; that you are unique, essential and valuable and that you live in joy and celebration of what was, is and will be.

And so it is.
